To introduce the 2026 Toyota HiLux grades, we sat down with Downtown Toyota’s Senior Sales Consultant, Jon Wimhurst, to get his early impressions and help customers understand what is new for this model. Jon has spent years guiding owners through the HiLux range and has a clear picture of what customers can expect.
From what we know the new HiLux will arrive in stages, with the dual cab pickups landing first around December to January, followed by the single cab, extra cab and cab chassis variants a little later around March to April. The biggest mechanical change is that Toyota has now moved the entire range to the 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine, retiring both the 2.7 litre petrol and the older 2.4 litre diesel. As Jon explains it, the 2.8 is the foundation for the future of HiLux, working neatly with Toyota’s 48 volt Active Drive system on the automatic grades. On top of that, the 2026 HiLux features a completely redesigned front end and tail lights, and a much more refined interior that Jon describes as having “a bit of a Prado feel” to it. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are finally included too, which Jon sees as a major improvement for day-to-day convenience. With WorkMate, SR, SR5 and Rogue returning, and the Rugged X making a comeback in 2025, the new lineup is shaping up to be the most modern, capable and connected HiLux range yet.
Your first step is to show them the lineup. Workmate, SR, SR5, Rogue and Rugged X. So you are going from the base model through to the top.
From there it is about asking questions. What are you going to use the car for? What do you need it to have? What are you absolutely concerned about and what are you not so fussed about? Is it going to be a work car? Is it a family car? Or do you just like the look of a ute and want one?
Once you understand that, it is much easier to work out which grade is going to suit them best.
The HiLux WorkMate is best suited for your trades person. Painters, carpenters, tilers, anyone that needs a tray on the back that is around that 2.4 to 2.5 metre length so they can carry ladders, painting gear, carpentry gear and tools of any sort for day to day work.
It is very much the pure work truck.
When we get to the HiLux SR, this grade is best suited to people who still need a work ute but want a little bit extra in their car.
Most will be looking at dual cab or extra cab so they can carry more people as well as gear. You still have the option of a single cab chassis, but a lot of customers will go straight to double or extra cab in SR.
You pick up more gross vehicle mass in the four wheel drives compared to WorkMate, different wheels and more features. It is that step between a basic trade ute and something with a bit more comfort.
Your HiLux SR5 customer is a bit of everything.
They will use it for work through the week, then for camping or weekends away. They like the look of a decent ute and want those extra bits and pieces.
Realistically, anyone can go for an SR5 if it is what they want and it fits their budget. It still does the jobs an SR will do, like taking stuff to the tip or loading bikes in the back, it just does it with a bit more style and comfort.
Your HiLux Rogue is best suited to a customer who wants a few more extras again. We often refer to it as the capable older sibling.
It has the lot. You have the electric roller cover that is unique to Rogue, marine grade detachable carpet in the tub, nicer wheels, a nicer look overall and the JBL nine speaker sound system. There is a little more comfort and a little more help in there.
All of our models now have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and from SR upwards you also get the wireless phone charger. WorkMate owners will still plug in, but SR and above are wireless.
With the new HiLux, the interior has been lifted again. The look and feel is closer to something like a Prado, and Rogue benefits from that.
The HiLux Rugged X is taking over from the GR and it is much more off road focused.
All four wheel drive HiLux models are capable, but Rugged X is designed around that off road use. It is more endurance built. You will see things like black alloy wheels, black mirrors, Rugged X highlights and body side mouldings down the doors, along with all terrain tyre style setups rather than purely road based tyres.
It is the one people will look at if they are doing more serious off roading.
WorkMate gives you that single cab option if you just need two seats and the bigger tray on the back. That is usually the classic trade setup.
Once you move to SR, most people are looking at dual cab or extra cab so they can carry more people as well as gear, although you can still order a single cab chassis in SR if you want that longer tray in a higher spec.
From a feature point of view, SR becomes the first step into a trade and comfort ute. You are getting things like the wireless charger and features such as the panoramic view monitor in the dual cabs, different alloy wheels and that extra GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) in the four wheel drives. Across the range a lot is shared, but SR is where it starts to feel less like an entry level work ute and more like a ute you are happy to live with every day.
I would say when it is not going to be purely a work truck.
Nine times out of ten, WorkMate is bought for one reason. I need it purely for work. You go to SR when you still need it for work, but you also want family time, the ability to carry more people and a bit more comfort.
If you are going to use it as both a work ute and a family or weekend ute, SR starts to make a lot more sense.
SR5 gives you more of the nice to haves.
You step into 18 inch alloy wheels, a different overall look to the car and the option for leather. SR5 can come standard with cloth seats, or you can option in leather trim which adds an electric driver’s seat and heated front seats.
So if those things matter to you, SR5 is where you find them.
That one really comes down to each individual customer.
It is roughly a nine thousand dollar jump, so you have to weigh up whether you need it or just want it. If it is not going to do as much hard work as an SR, and you really like the look and the extra comfort, then SR5 is the way to go.
In a team of tradies, it is fair to say the team will often be in WorkMate or SR, and the boss will be in the SR5.
The big one is the back end. Rogue has the electric roller cover which you cannot get on any other model. That is unique to Rogue.
It also has the marine grade detachable carpet in the tub, so you are protecting the tub without needing an extra liner. You are not scratching everything up every time you throw something in the back.
Then you have the JBL sound system as standard, leather seats as standard, different wheels and trim, and that refreshed interior design which is closer to a Prado style layout.
For a lot of customers, it is the combination of that back end, the look and the extra comfort that convinces them to go Rogue.
At this stage, until we have had more time with Rugged X, it is fair to say Rogue is your on road and lifestyle hero, and Rugged X is the off road hero.
Rugged X is going to be designed more for off road use. Think all terrain tyres and off road focused features, rather than the more road based setup on Rogue.
Price wise they are very similar, so it will come down to whether you want the more lifestyle focused Rogue or the more off road focused Rugged X.
Absolutely. There’s a story from a few years back when the last generation HiLux came out. A report went back to Japan saying we had managed to break a HiLux with a stick, and the Japanese engineers didn’t believe it. They actually flew out here, went to where the cars were being tested, and were shown exactly how it happened.
That really opened their eyes to how harsh Australian conditions are, especially for off road. Since then, around ninety percent of the four wheel drive testing in pre-build is done here in Australia. They still test in other parts of the world for extreme cold and extreme heat, but most of the off-road development happens on our roads.
It is probably around 70 percent work people and 30 percent who just like a ute for lifestyle and want one.
A lot of that work group will still say, yes, I use it through the week for work, but on the weekend I go camping or I take the family away. That is where SR, SR5 and Rogue really come into their own.
The good thing about HiLux is that it is such a versatile and diverse car. It can do pretty much everything you want it to do. If you want it to be a pure work truck that parks in the garage while you drive something else on the weekend, so be it. If you want one car that does everything for you, then it is a damn good choice.
